  • Alley Cat Allies - Since 1990, the only national advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats.
  • Alliance for Stray Animals and People (ASAP) - A tax-deductible, non-profit group of primarily cat rescuers in the nation's capitol. We help stray and abandoned animals and offer modest assistance to indigent people. We collaborate with other groups and seek to empower individual rescuers.
  • The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington - Since 1995, this all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization has been dedicated to the rescue, care and adoption of homeless cats and kittens in the metropolitan Washington DC community. Cats in our program reside at private homes of foster care givers and remain within our organization until a permanent home is found.
  • Four Paws Rescue Team (VA, MD, DC) - Cats only. A non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization helping cats find homes. Offers cat care, useful links and more.
  • MetroPets Online - Promotes the adoption of homeless animals and the well-being of companion animals in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area.
  • Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue - (MD, DE, PA, NY, NJ, VA, WV, DC) - A not-for-profit a haven for Border Collies and dogs of the herding group that have been discarded, neglected, abandoned or stray. Many of these dogs are turned into animal shelters because their previous owners discovered they were not border collie material or because changes in their lives left them unable to care properly for their dogs.
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue Inc - An all-volunteer, U.S. 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that operates throughout the USA and Canada. It is the official rescue program for both the AKC- and CKC-recognized national breed clubs for both the USA and Canada, respectively, as well as most local and regional breed clubs in both countries.
  • United Maltese Rescue (VA, MD, DC Metro Area) The United Maltese Rescue exists to place stray, abandoned and/or unwanted Maltese in homes which will provide a high level of care and where the spirit of the UMR Code of Ethics is observed. The rescue will assist Maltese owners, who, for any reason, can no longer provide a home for their dog.
  • Washington Animal Rescue League - Founded in 1914, they opened the first animal shelter in Washington, D.C. for stray and abused dogs, cats, and horses. In 2006, the League completed a revolutionary transformation, making it one of the world's most progressive animal rehabilitation centers. At the same time, the Medical Center was renovated to accommodate more extensive procedures and treatments and to accommodate the 7,000 animal patients that it now receives annually.
  • Washington Humane Society - The only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States, has been the area’s leading voice for animals since 1870. As the only open-access shelter in the Nation's Capital, the Washington Humane Society provides comfort and care to over 15,000 animals each year through its broad range of programs and services including sheltering, adoption, spay and neuter, CatNiPP, humane law enforcement, lost and found, human–animal therapy programs and humane education.
