Song Bird - Birders' Blend Coffee

Shade grown coffee is for bird lovers who love coffee! It's a light roast coffee with notes of caramel and cashew nut, sweet and
lively on the tongue, with a long buttery aftertaste. That's how the Roastmaster at Thanksgiving Coffee Company describes this lovely coffee. We just drink it
because it tastes really yummy...and we love the unending varieties of song birds' beautiful and exquisite songs.

Why is "Shade Grown" coffee better?

For one, it tastes better because the coffee berries are allowed to mature slowly. This particular blend of coffee is one that
shares a habitat with songbirds. In fact, shade grown coffee farms are second only to undisturbed rainforest as the best habitat for migrating birds. Buying
shade grown coffee helps save trees for millions of birds that would otherwise have no place to live. Coffee grown in full sun requires chemical fertilizers
and herbicides because shade trees are removed to increase yields. Studies in Mexico and Colombia found 97% fewer bird species in sun coffee than in shade
grown coffee. To stop this trend, and send a strong message to growers that we understand the negative effect of sun grown coffee of migratory birds, we are
partaking in an emerging nationwide movement for consumers to request shade grown coffee.

The American Birding Association and
Thanksgiving Coffee Company can verify that the Song Bird coffee you are purchasing
comes from a shade coffee farm. Your purchase of this coffee helps fund ABA education and conservation projects that protect neo-tropical migratory and
resident birds. Part of the cost of this coffee supports the Birders Exchange Program. This highly successful effort has sent binoculars, field guides and
other vital tools to more than 350 programs in 30 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The ABA is a non-profit organization that fosters public
awareness of birds and their vital role in the environment.

Now back to the coffee...

This coffee is a blend of two Central American coffees, resulting in a taste that is carmelly with a suggestion of cashew nut, sweet and
lively on the tongue, with a long buttery aftertaste. To achieve these flavors, coffee was blended from the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua, roasted to a medium
brown color and combined with a Guatemalan coffee from the Lake Atitlan region, roasted light brown. Guatemalan was used for the acidity (liveliness) and the
Nicaraguan for all the rest.

Both coffees are shade grown above 1200 meters, certified organic, certified fair traded, and were produced by small-scale coffee farmers
and marketed through their cooperatives.
