Poodle - Good choice of dog companion for allergy sufferers

There are three basic sizes of Poodles: Toy (6-9 lbs), Miniature (15-17 lbs) and Standard (45-70 lbs, with females being up to 60 lbs). For allergy-sufferers seeking a dog companion, they can be a good choice.*

Common personality traits you will find in a Toy Poodle:

  • Remarkably intelligent
  • Sensitive
  • Highly responsive - one of the most trainable breeds
  • Social - they like to be with people
  • Pleasant
  • Happy
  • Perky
  • Lively
  • Good watchdog for its size
  • Some can be high-strung or timid
  • Can do okay in an apartment with no yard
  • Better with older children -- especially if well socialized.

Common personality traits you will find in a Miniature Poodle:

  • Super intelligent
  • Sensitive
  • Cheerful
  • Highly responsive - one of the most trainable breeds
  • Social - they like to be with people
  • Tendency to bark a lot
  • Amusing
  • Clever
  • Good watchdog for its size, rarely becoming aggressive
  • Some can be high-strung or timid
  • Can do okay in an apartment with no yard
  • May be good with children -- particularly if well socialized.

Common personality traits you will find in a Standard Poodle:

  • Super intelligent
  • Social - they like to be with people
  • Highly responsive - one of the most trainable breeds
  • Proud, dignified
  • Good-natured
  • Elegant
  • Calmer (typically) than other Poodle sizes
  • Good good guard dogs and some can be trained as hunters
  • Some can be high-strung or timid
  • Can do okay in an apartment with a small yard
  • Better than the other breed sizes with children and strangers.

The Poodle is susceptible to many genetic diseases, therefore it is important to know as much as possible in advance about the dog you are planning to have as your companion. It is not uncommon for a Poodle to have: ear infections, runny eyes, cataracts and blindness, digestive tract and heart disorders, skin conditions, slipped stifle, PRA, allergies, skin conditions, diabetes, epilepsy. Also IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia). Check with the size - some are more prone to certain condtions than others.

They do need daily outdoor walks. Playtime is also highly recommended to minimize any stress and/or behavioral issues (in any dog breed).

Despite the possibility of being a better dog for allergy-sufferers,* Poodles do need frequent and extensive grooming.

* Please note: An allergy test is recommended before buying any breed where allergies or asthma are a problem.
