Bichon Frise - Good choice of dog companion for allergy sufferers

The Bichon Frise, weighing in between 7-12 lbs, is a puffball of a dog with a loosely curled double coat consisting of a textured outer coat lined with a soft, fine, silky undercoat that is 3-4" long and is virtually hypo-allergenic. For allergy-sufferers seeking a dog companion, they can be a good choice.*

Common personality traits you will find in a Bichon Frise:
  • Loves human company

  • Independent spirit

  • Affectionate

  • Bold and lively, yet not a yapper

  • Easy to train - competitive and obedient

  • Happy

  • Good watchdog for its size

  • Can do fine in an apartment with no yard - may be difficult to housebreak though

  • Tend to be great with children, other dogs and animals

The Bichon Frise was one of the "Yuppie Puppies" very popular in the 1980s. As a result many were carelessly over-bred and some Bichon lines can be snippy. They can also be prone to watery eyes, cataracts, skin and ear ailments, also epilepsy and dislocated kneecaps. They can be very sensitive to flea bites.

They do need daily outdoor walks. Playtime is also highly recommended to minimize any stress and/or behavioral issues (in any dog breed).

Despite the possibility of being a better dog for allergy-sufferers,* the Bichon Frise does need frequent grooming.

* Please note: An allergy test is recommended before buying any breed where allergies or asthma are a problem.
