What is the difference between Nupro and Missing Link?

Missing Link's first two ingredients, flax seed and blackstrap molasses, make up approximately 80% of the formula. Nupro uses a more nutritionally balanced formula, not relying on one or two ingredients for the
bulk of their product.

Missing Link also freeze dries some to their ingredients which causes a certain amount of nutritional degradation. When something is frozen, water is removed in the process. Vitamins and minerals are also lost in the water at this point. Additionally, many of the enzymes are deactivated in the process. Nupro's ingredients are raw and preserved naturally with kelp and bee pollen.

Finally, there is a significant price difference. Both companies start with top quality ingredients, but Nupro keeps the price down by not spending large sums of money on marketing. They have spent years building their business based on word of mouth of their loyal customers.

Why do I need fish oil if I give my pet flax seed?

There are different types of Omega-3 fatty acids and they are not equal nutritionally speaking.
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is a plant based Omega-3 and is usually found in fish. It does not stay in the body long and has been found to be very beneficial for the brain (including helping depression, bipolar disorder, memory loss and ADD). Fish is the best source of EPA.

- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is considered essential for brain development and is especially important for
pregnant or nursing mothers. It has the ability to accumulate in the body requiring less daily in the
diet when compared to EPA. Again, fish is the best source as with EPA.

- Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is converted by the body into EPA and DHA, though not well enough to make it an
acceptable substitute. It is beneficial at lowering blood pressure and helping to relieve arthritis pain. ALA is found in flaxseed and is advised for those who will not consume fish. It is considered an inferior source for Omega-3s.
