Schnauzer - Good choice of dog companion for allergy sufferers

There are three basic sizes of Schnauzers: Miniature (10-15 lbs), Standard (30-45 lbs; females up to 40 lbs) and Giant (60-80 lbs; females 55-75 lbs).
For allergy-sufferers seeking a dog companion, they can be a good choice.*

Common personality traits you will find in a Miniature Schnauzer:
- Intelligent

- Loving

- Demanding of time from caregiver

- Tendency to bark a lot (but it's not a yappy bark)

- Good companions and family pets

- Can be feisty and fairly dog-aggressive

- Can do okay in an apartment with no yard

- Tend to be good with children

- Great "travel" dogs

Common personality traits you will find in a Standard Schnauzer:
- Fearless and protective

- Lively, but not restless

- High-spirited and affectionate

- Demanding

- Playful

- Energetic

- May be very protective and dominant - guarding objects, places and people from other people

- Can do okay in an apartment with no yard

- Generally good "travel" dogs

Common personality traits you will find in a Giant Schnauzer:
- HUGE NEED for exercise - generally need walks/rigorous exercise 2x/day

- Intelligent

- A true Velcro dog

- Very protective, bold and spirited

- Calm, loyal, loving and responsible

- Easy to train

- Some are serious, hard-headed; others can be goofballs

- Excellent guard dogs - with a relentless, imposing bark

- Usually good with other pets and some can be good with other dogs if properly socialized as puppies

- Not suited toward apartment living - thrive in acreage

- Can be fairly reserved with strangers

Standard Schnauzers are generally without genetically-prone health concerns or problems. Miniatures and Giants can have health problems (do your research on the
particular Schnauzer you are thinking of as a companion).

With this breed, it is best to do your homework (find out as much as you can about the specific one you are thinking of taking in as a companion) as
they can be prone to different genetic problems as well as possess entirely different personalities.

They do need daily outdoor walks (Giant Schnauzers need LOTS). Playtime is also highly recommended to minimize any stress and/or behavioral issues (in any dog breed).

* Please note: An allergy test is recommended before buying any breed where allergies or asthma are a problem.
