2006 is the Year of the Dog
Well, of course we couldn't resist highlighting this year's Chinese zodiac animal, the Dog, which runs from January 29, 2006
to February 17, 2007.
The Year of the Dog
Since the Dog is considered an ethical and idealistic sign in the Chinese zodiac, it is believed there will be increased social
awareness. Broadmindedness and fairness will be more supported than usual. It will be considered a time for reflecting and assessing one's values.
We should observe more widespread generosity and acts of selflessness.
The Chinese Calendar
The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order
to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-year cycle). This is the
same as adding an extra day on leap year.
Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. Because
of cyclical lunar dating, the first day of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. This is why, according to
the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. January 29 is the official beginning of the lunar calendar year 4703
(in the Western calendar that is the year 2006).
