Originally used a farm dog, herder and hunter of small game and vermin in Ireland, which is his country of origin, the Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier only made its first public presentation in the early 1930s. A medium-sized dog, they weigh in around 35-45 lbs (females 30-40 lbs). For allergy-sufferers seeking a dog companion, they can be a good choice.*

Common personality traits you will find in a Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier:

• A playful and friendly Terrier breed - lifelong puppy-like attitude
• Alert
• Happy
• Well-coordinated
• Straightforward nature
• Sweet-tempered, easy-going and self-confident
• Great watch dog -- seldom barks unnecessarily (but will at arrival of guests)
• Usually very loving with children and get along reasonably well with other dogs -- provided they are socialized when they are young
• No cats!
• Can do fine in an apartment with no yard
• Does not tolerate heat
• Tend to be great with children, other dogs and animals

The Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier is prone to flea allergies and protein wasting disease (PLE and PLN).

They do need daily outdoor walks. Playtime is also highly recommended to minimize any stress and/or behavioral issues (in any dog breed).

Despite the possibility of being a better dog for allergy-sufferers,* the Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier does need frequent grooming.
