The Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo (pronounced Show-low-its-queen-tli, or Show-low for short) comes in three sizes: toy (5-15 lbs), miniature (15-30 lbs) and standard (25-40 lbs). There is also a fur-coated variety. For the sake of providing a quick description to allergy-sufferers seeking a dog companion,* this is just about the hairless variety.

It's also considered hardy with no specific breed-related concerns. Skin problems can arise on the hairless variety particularly due to poor breeding neglect, or over bathing and over lotioning, stripping natural protection's and clogging pores. A well bred hairless Xolo will have very fine soft skin, yet hardy. Bathe and lotion once or twice a month max, or only as needed. These types of dogs do need sunscreen, so please remember to apply to your dog companion too before any sun exposure.

They enjoy many toys and going on daily walks. They do require lots of exercise, attention and discipline as they have lots of energy - particularly in their early years.

The Xolo has been around for over 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest and rarest breeds.
